Theme

The theme of the Education Day to be held at this year’s SIOP Meeting in London is:

“Working as a paediatric oncologist: some real life challenges and their solutions”

Objective

The aim of the programme is to address some of the practical challenges in the day to day clinical practice of the paediatric oncologist. The presentations will focus on areas which are often less well discussed in preparing trainees for senior positions in clinical teams.

Content

There are three main themes:

  • Accessing New Drugs

This session will explore the development of new therapies from the perspective of the clinician, the pharmaceutical industry and the regulatory authority. It will include a discussion of some of the legal and ethical difficulties that may be encountered by clinicians in their own treatment centres and will use a disease specific illustration to highlight current approaches to the development and introduction of new therapies

  • Working in Multidisciplinary Teams (MDT)

Working as part of a MDT is now common practice in many countries. This brings benefits and support for clinicians but also creates challenges in terms of how differences of approach are discussed and resolved. This session will explore the role of the MDT and the psychology of team working. A simulated MDT case discussion will be used to illustrate the issues under discussion.

  • Difficult Decision Making

Paediatric oncologists not infrequently find themselves dealing with particularly rare diagnoses for which there is no established approach to management, or with challenging clinical situations in which significant risks may need to be taken in deciding treatment. This session will use three case presentations to illustrate challenging cases with expert commentary on how solutions and support can be found in such circumstances

There will be a final session during which a parent’s view will be offered on the issues raised during the day and an opportunity for discussion with the faculty contributing to the programme.

Target Audience

The programme is designed particularly for paediatric oncologists in training and those in the early years of more senior appointments. Participants from other disciplines involved in the treatment of children and young people with cancer are also welcomed. Registration will be limited to 100 participants. All will receive a copy of the presentations given during the programme and a certificate of attendance.
